“Today is the day that the Lord Hath made.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it” Psalms 118:24
Don’t you love this picture. It is a gift from one of my grandchildren. I can’t look at it without smiling. Our precious five year old created such a vivid reminder of the simple blessings that are present every day.
As part of our New Year celebration this year, my husband and I, along with daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters watched one of my favorite old movies; The Wizard of Oz. As I watched that beloved film, for maybe the 50th time, I still felt a bit like Dorothy; skipping along on that yellow brick road paved with hope, optimism and new possibilities.
As so many children’s stories, The Wizard of Oz, is loaded with life lessons. Remember what Dorothy and her friends; the scarecrow, the tin man and the lion learned? They discovered they already had everything it took to be happy: a brain, a heart, a home, the nerve. And they didn’t find those things in some faraway place over the rainbow. It was inside them all along.
We are in such an age of ‘not enough’; aren’t we? If you listen you’ll hear these phrases expressed over and over again each day: “I don’t have enough time, enough money, enough stuff. I didn’t get enough sleep, enough food, enough attention, enough outfits, enough love.” But, wait….we do have enough. We have everything we need to be happy.
As I plan for my New Year’s goals and resolutions to live a full human life, I must remind myself of that. And every day rejoice, give thanks and be glad!
